| Synopsis: |
East is East , is a raucous comedy about what happens when a house full of teenagers decides to rebel against their father’s archaic traditions. George Khan is the father of seven free-spirited children. He wants the best for them which, in his mind, means raising them in the traditional Pakistani custom. The Khan kids’ relationships with their father George (a.k.a. ‘Gengis’) becomes a game of dodge-ball, avoiding his restrictions. Nazir, the oldest, backs out of an arranged marriage. Meenah, a tomboy, prefers playing soccer to wearing a sari. In cahoots with his mother, flower-child Saleem, attends art school-- not engineering school like his father believes. Heart-throb Tariq breaks the rules by breaking the heart of every woman in his path. And for the others, including 12-year-old Sajid, life is about sneaking in Western pleasures while their father isn’t watching. When George tries to put his foot down, his English wife, Ella (Linda Bassett), becomes caught in the middle of a flying circus; she’s torn between loyalty toward her husband’s beliefs and empathy toward her kids desires to make their own ways in the world. For George Khan, the war for his traditional Pakistani values is about to be waged against London’s bellbottoms, discos, and free-wheeling lifestyles, and this is where the fun begins... |
