Two major theater chains, United Artists and Loews Cineplex, have both raised their ticket prices by 25 cents in New York City. This brings the cost for an individual adult ticket to over $10 for the first time.
The price increase was put into effect late in December. A child's ticket price is now $6.75 at the chains' theaters.
Loews said the price increase was due to inflation and that they are still at a fair level. "In comparison to other entertainment options, movie ticket prices are modest and remain one of the most affordable out-of-home entertainment activities," a spokesman said.
Ticket prices at chains nationally are also on the upward trend but New York City is the first to break the $10 level.
