SOCIAL FRIDAYS

Social Friday: Bring us your laments and joys, whatever they are (Updates today)

By John Couture

That's just a really fancy way of declaring that this is another free-for-all Friday. To be honest, they are all open to discussing whatever is on your minds, but this week between getting up at 5:00 AM this morning to play hockey and the long, rainy week that we've had down here in the South, I'm tapped.

So, my challenge to you dear reader, is to inspire me and keep me awake on this Social Friday. Heck, if you're feeling extra spry today, why don't you head on over to our Terry Fator contest and tell us a joke. We're giving out some pretty sweet swag.

Until then, I'm going to keep on plugging away and I await your inspiration. The best I could come up with was something about state fairs since I'm being dragged to one tomorrow. But, I quickly realized that there wasn't a whole day's worth of discussion to be had on it.

Update #1

Heres a thought what is up with movies with big hype just to be let down? I saw 9 when it came out and i was excited because of the trailers and posters. But when i saw it i realized twom thing not an Elijah Wood fan and the movie bored me. Now don't get me wrong it had it's good points but it was not that good. If I could give any advice i would say to Tim Burton "Stick to directing Movies" unless it a movie like Nightmare Before Christmas. What was you guys Opinion?
--Jeff from Muskegon, MI

Yeah, I know they were expecting bigger things from 9, but what can you expect when you decide to go up against Tyler Perry. Speaking of, I know I'm no where near his demo, but how does the guy continue to pull such huge box office numbers for basically the same schtick over and over again?

I would like to think that Kevin Smith brings the funny a lot more, but sadly doesn't get the box office support. Oh well...things to ponder on a long, dreary day.

Update #2

It is a slow day, isn't it? I'm watching Bones DVDs to keep myself awake.

I'm going to the county fair in my hometown tonight. I doubt it'll be exciting. It's the most boring walk ever, but it's tradition. And in a small southern town, tradition is everything.

I had my first 3D experience last weekend. The theatre in my town finally got 3D technology, and showed Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. It was pretty cool. I can't wait until Sunday when I can go see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. (I'm only going because the super hot Anna Faris and Lauren Graham provide voices in it.) I will be able to see Avatar the way Cameron wants it to be seen in December.
--Shane from NC

It is slow, you can say that again.

BTW, it would be better to hear AND see the super hot Anna Faris. I'm just sayin'.

Update #3

I am getting married tomorrow. For the honeymoon, my wife and I had discussed seeing as many movies as we can. Looking at the current movie lineup, I'm so disappointed at the lack of high quality movies in theaters right now. It is that time of the year but we had hoped for more. Hopefully some of these movies on the horizon turn out to be incredible. Keep up the great work guys!
--Chad from Barstow, CA

First of all, from Tim and I, congrats in a big way Chad!! Getting married is a wonderful experience (no, really!). That's why I've done it twice (and yes ladies, I am looking for number three currently...) and Tim was lucky enough to find the special one on his first go-round!

As for the quality movies in the megaplexes, I can wholeheartedly recommend Inglourious Basterds and District 9. They are both well worth the price of admission (which let's face it, they're worse than the markup on gas, but I digress...).

After that, you are right. Slim pickings. If you're looking for more of a palatable (pun intended) date type movie, I've heard good things about Julie & Julia and if comedy is more your thing, you probably go wrong with Mike Judge's Extract.

Good luck tomorrow! And remember, it's "I Do." Nothing ruins a young nuptial more than forgetting those two little words.

Update #4

My wife and I started a tradition of watching bad movies on Saturday nights(usually on Showtime or Cinemax). Among some of the gems have been The Breed, Clawed: The Legend of Sasquatch, The Hills Have Eyes II, and Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions. We watched Bug(with Ashley Judd) a couple weeks ago, hoping it would be bad, but it was just disturbing. Right now I have another Clive Barker movie recorded on my DVR(Clive Barker's The Plague) and I hope I find something else pleasantly crappy to watch tomorrow night!
--Shawm from San Luis Obispo, CA

You know, that's a pretty cool idea. Of course, I'd need to find me a wife who also likes really cheesy bad movies. Maybe that's a starting point.

Let me know if you ever run out of crappy movies, I've got a ton and the pile grows exponentially each day.

Well folks, not bad for a return week. We should be in full "get your freak on" swing next week. Have a great weekend!

Sorry folks, the park's closed!
