Everyone knows that when you do a sequel to a smash hit, you've got to go bigger. Way bigger. Well, Roland Emmerich definitely got the memo because our first look at Independence Day Resurgence proves that the aliens are back they brought some bigger guns with them.

Independence Day Resurgence opens on June 24, 2016. but the film has been mostly shrouded in mystery up until now. Obviously, we know that Will Smith won't be back and now we know why. I won't spoil it for you here, but it wouldn't take you much time to find the answer on social media or via a Google search.

The rest of the gang is back, though - at least, those that survived the first invasion attempt. Jeff Goldblum takes center stage in the film and this first trailer as the wizened old man who has risen to a position of alien invasion expert after successfully thwarting the aliens' first attempt to invade Earth. Bill Pullman also returns as presumed ex-President Thomas J. Whitmore. Of course, after you literally save the Earth from an alien attack, you'd think the least they could do is rewrite a page or two in the U.S. constitution.

His famous speech provides the backdrop for the trailer, but the action points to a more dour experience with the aliens this time. I'm not sure where you go after you blow up the White House, but I'm on board. It will be interesting to see if newcomers to the ID4 universe will be able to capture the same patriotism as the original cast and how the events of 9/11 will play out in this story.
