It's no secret that the Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone film La La Land is poised to sizzle the silver screen as it continues its rollout thanks to heavy awards buzz, but today, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association lit a match under the musical. La La Land led a very diverse field of Golden Globe nominees with seven nominations, while fellow awards front-runner Moonlight followed closely with six nominations.

Last year's awards season was punctuated as much by the films and talent that didn't get nominated as by those that did, so it's a bit refreshing to see a wide open race as we enter the peak of the awards season. While it's no surprise to La La Land and Moonlight get much-deserved recognition, it is perhaps a little surprising to see perennial stalwarts Tom Hanks and Martin Scorsese on the outside looking in.

Scorsese's Silence is starting to pick up considerable buzz to be a favorite to win the Oscar for Best Picture, not to mention a Best Directing nomination. Instead, newcomers such as Tom Ford, Barry Jenkins and Damien Chazelle were honored with Golden Globe nominations for their directing work. Of course, the Golden Globes do tend to get a reputation for being a bit on the radical side at times.

As usual, there were plenty of radicalness when it came to the Comedy/Musical nominations. Deadpool enjoyed not one, but two nominations while actor Jonah Hill got singled out for his performance in the box office dud War Dogs.

On the TV side, HBO had a great morning with several of their new shows including Westworld, Divorce and Insecure all getting nods, while Netflix and Amazon continued to eat away at traditional network TV dominance with their strong showings.

Jimmy Fallon will host the 74th Annual Golden Globes on Sunday, January 8. The show will air live on NBC between 8 and 11 p.m. ET from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The complete list of nominations are below.
