• John was married to Rosemary Margaret Hobor until his death. They had two children, Jennifer and Christopher.
• John died while filming Wagons East.
• John was co-owner of the Toronto Argonauts, a Canadian Football League team.
• The rock group Ween dedicated their 1994 lp 'Chocolate and Cheese' to John.
• John is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
• Once in 1991, John rented a yacht to cruise the English Bay during an Argonauts game. He invited Argo's front office and support staff only to join him during the game.
