• Joaquin took his mother to the 'Gladiator' premiere.
• Joaquin Raphael is his birthname, but he changed his name to Leaf for part of his childhood. He wanted to be more "earthy" like his brother and sister. He took back his name in the early 90's.
• Joaquin co-starred with Liv Tyler in 'Inventing The Abbotts.' The two dated for the next three years.
• Joaquin has three sisters Summer, Liberty, and Rain. He has one brother, the late River Phoenix.

• Joaquin's life was plagued with the tragedy of losing his brother to a drug overdose. Joaquin and friends were out with River the night he died. Joaquin made the frantic 911 call trying to save his brother's life. He once again retreated from the spotlight.
• While coping with his brother's death, Joaquin traveled with his father in Mexico for five years.
