• Gene is married to Betsy Arakawa. The couple do not have any children, but Gene has three children from a previous marriage to Fay Maltese.
• Gene lied about his age when he was 16 so he could join the marines.
• After he finished his three years of service in the Marine Corp, Gene took on several small jobs until he decided to enroll at the Univesity of Illinois to study journalism and television production. Sixth months later, he headed off to New York.
• Gene and classmate Dustin Hoffman were supposedly voted "least likely to succeed" from their class.
• Finally deciding he wanted to pursue acting, Gene drifted to California and enrolled in acting classes at the Pasadena Playhouse. Gene and classmate Dustin Hoffman were supposedly voted "least likely to succeed" from their class.
• Gene was the studios first choice to play Mike Brady in The Brady Bunch sitcom.
• Gene has been nominated for five Oscars. He's won two. Best Supporting Actor in 'The Unforgiven' and Best Actor in 'The French Connection.'
• While in New York, he enrolled in radio classes. He worked for stations in Illinois and Florida until he decided he wanted to be seen, not only heard.
• Gene presently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
• He enjoys impressionistic painting and stone sculpting.
