• Val was a student at the Hollywood's Professional's School and also studied under Julliard's drama program. He was the youngest student to ever be accepted to this prestigious program.
• Val was married to Joanne Whalley from 1988 to 1996. The couple met on the set of Willow.
• Val attended Chatsworth High School, along with Kevin Spacey and Mare Winningham.
• Val has a daughter, Mercedes, and a son, Jack.
• Val began his acting career on stage. He still does some theater work.
• Val wrote a book of poetry in the 1980's. Supposedly, only 5,000 copies were printed. Val says he gave them to family and friends and then bought the remaining copies off the shelves and keeps them locked away.
• In 1994, Val volunteered for a mision trip to Baghdad with AmeriCares. The group took over 90,000 pounds of medicines and medical care to the relief of the Iraqi people.
• Val has been working on a project with Bowen Boschier in Africa, which will be his directorial debut when it is complete. Val not only co-wrote the script, but will star and narrate the film. It is the story of Boschier's father who walked 30,000 miles across the African wilderness.
• Val hlas several pets, dogs, cats, chickens, horses and buffalo. Yes, he has three buffalo as pets.
• Val is very active in Native American affairs and is a huge supporter of environmental safety. He also supports Lead or Leave and Habitat for Humanity.
• Val started dating actress Daryl Hannah in mid-2001.
