• Cate has a brother and a sister. They were raised by their mother, as their father died when Cate was only ten years old.
• Cate attended the University of Melbourne for a time, but decided she could get a better education from traveling the world.
• When she left England and traveled to Egypt, Cate took a part as an extra in an Arabic film. Her future in the entertainment industry began then and there.
• After traveling, she returned to Melbourne and enrolled at the National Institute for Dramatic Arts.
• Cate's career began on the theater stage, where she was nominated for awards.
• After the theater, Cate starred in several Australian television movies.
• Cate is married to Andrew Upton, whom she met while shooting one of her television movies.
• Cate's big break in Hollywood came with her role as Queen Elizabeth in the movie, 'Elizabeth.' Cate was an Oscar nominee for Best Actress.
• On Valentine's Day, 1999, Cate joined actresses Melanie Griffith, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore and Gillian Anderson for a one-time benefit performance of 'The Vagina Monologues' on the Old Vic Theatre stage. Cate is very active with charitable causes for children's and women's issues.
