• John studied at St. Cloud State University for one year but left school for Austin, Texas where his brother lived.
• John graduated from Jefferson High School.
• He started his acting career on the stage. John was a member of the touring company 'Greater Tuna' and worked for Big Stage Productions.
• After filming The Perfect Storm and Hardball, John returned home in the summer of 2001 to perform at the local theater company, Theatre L'Homme Dieu.
• John left Texas in 1990 for Los Angeles.
